Seminole County school board members have a tough decision to make deciding which schools they'll close to cut down on district costs.
WDBO uncovered that more schools could be in danger.
Geneva, Keeth and Casselberry aren’t the only elementary schools that are scheduled to close.
Seminole County school board member Dede Schaffner says eight local schools are on the chopping block.
“We have been advised to cut two for temporary closure,” Schaffner said.
She says it comes down to money. The district is still $19 million in the hole.
“We are waiting to see what the legislature is going to do, if we are going to get additional funding this year,” Schaffner said.
At Keeth Elementary School, parents held a PTA meeting Thursday night, fighting to save the school.
Kathy Gerbery tells WDBO she doesn't think the school board has exhausted its options to cut costs elsewhere.
She's been a teacher at Keeth since it opened 28 years ago.
“Please try to come up with other ways perhaps rezoning, no school should close,” Gerbery said.
Inside the packed media center, parents also voiced their opinions on the possible closing.
“These kids are getting an excellent education and if you destroy that you are destroying the community,” a parent said.
Another parent says he choose for his daughter to attend Keeth Elementary School because it is a good school.
The board will make their decision at the end of the month on what two schools will be closing.
