Orange County teacher, friend charged with sexually abusing teen in Apopka home

A middle school teacher and mother of two is back in the Orange County Jail Tuesday night, accused of participating in sexual abuse of a teenager in her Apopka home.

Kimberly Honaker was originally arrested and charged with child neglect for allegedly failing to report the sexual abuse.

Police said Honaker knew that 59-year-old Robert Pruitt was molesting the 13-year-old victim.

"When they see something like that taking place, they're obligated to report it," said Sgt. Ed Chittenden with Apopka police.

But late Tuesday, investigators announced Honaker would be charged with the alleged abuse as well.

"According to our investigation, we believe she was a participant in the molestation," said Chittenden.

Apopka police said they arrested Pruitt in connection with the alleged abuse at Honaker's home after his estranged wife tipped them off. Pruitt has been charged with several counts of lewd and lascivious molestation.

He seemed to be unaware of the charges he's facing while on his way to the Orange County Jail.

"I just gave them a statement, but I don't have any charges yet," Pruitt said.

Pruitt denied that Honaker participated in the alleged sexual abuse of the 13-year-old.

"I've known her for her whole lifetime," Pruitt said when asked if Honaker was involved. "No I  don't think so, well actually, I know that"

The Department of Children and Families has placed Honaker's two children in foster care while the investigation continues.

"It's pretty disgusting," said neighbor Cory Ellis. "We have little kids here and don't want anyone in our neighborhood like that."

Parents and students in the district were alerted by the principal on Tuesday.

"We just got a call from the schools today," said parent Mark Gomez.

In the recorded message, Principal Kelly Pelletier said, "You may see media reports regarding one of our teachers who was arrested this past weekend for a situation unrelated to any of the duties the teacher performed here at our school.

The teacher has not returned to school since the arrest. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement."

Honaker, who is a language arts teacher at Apopka Middle School, was hired by the school district in 1997.

School officials said she is on paid leave until the next school board meeting, where they'll recommend she be fired from her position.
