'Obamaphone' tents hit Orlando streets

They're popping up all around Orlando: bright, yellow tents advertising free government cell phones.

At the intersection of North John Young Parkway and Old Winter Garden Road sits a Safelink tent, where News 96.5 found three workers armed with clipboards, waiting to sign residents up for the government program.

"We're not allowed to answer any questions. I'm sorry I wish we could," said one Safelink worker.

After the employees refused to answer any of his questions, News 96.5's Jonathan Beaton took a different approach - asking if he could sign up.

When Beaton didn't qualify, the Safelink employees told him that only people receiving Medicaid or food stamps are eligible for the phones.

During the 2012 Presidential election the so called 'Obamaphones' were a hot topic, especially after the video below went viral.

News 96.5 reached out to Safelink via a 1-800 number. So far those calls have been unreturned.
