Man feared dead after being swallowed by a sinkhole

Fire Rescue workers in Brandon, Florida are trying to find a man that was swallowed by a sinkhole that opened up under his bedroom last night.

36-year-old Jeff Bush, a roadside maintenance worker for the Florida Department of Transportation, was in his bed when authorities say the ground started to give way. Bush's brother Jeremy tried to rescue him, and was almost pulled in himself.

"I jumped in the hole ... and was trying to dig him out, but I couldn't find him. I heard, I thought I could hear him hollerin' for me to help him."

Other family members, including a child, were in the home at the time, but they escaped unharmed.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Chief Ron Rogers said in a news conference on Friday that things don't look good.

"We place some of our urban search and rescue equipment that is specialized for this type of emergency, some listening devices that are designed to hear essentially the sound a mouse would make walking across the floor, they are that sensitive. They did not detect any signs of life."

The sinkhole is nearly 100 feet wide, and 50 feet deep. Deputies have evacuated several homes in the area while the man's family holds on to hope.

"Just to get closure I guess, make sure he's not ... dead ... see if he's still alive. (crying) I know in my heart he's dead ... but I just want to be here for him 'cause I love him. He's my brother, man."
