A school district on South Dakota's Standing Rock Indian Reservation has decided to drop its "midget" mascot and nickname because it's offensive to little people, after the Little People of America organization asked that a change be considered.
The "midget" has been the mascot of the McLaughlin School District since 1929, but school board president Juliana White Bull-Taken Alive said there was little opposition to changing it, and that it had in fact been talked about for years.
Students will be in charge of creating a new mascot and nickname.
Some Native American groups have in recent years been pushing for sports teams to change names and mascots that they say are offensive.
The most well-known effort is that against the Washington Redskins, a word that Native Americans say is a slur.
But the team owner has vowed to never change the name.
