Daytona Beach, Fla — Doctors say it will take months for a 19-year-old waitress to recover after she jumped off the Daytona Beach pier Saturday in an effort to try to save a boy caught in a rip current.
Hanna Pignato broke her back in three places and also broke her heel after the nearly 20 foot jump into rough surf.
She was working on the rooftop deck of Joe's Crab Shack when a crowd gathered to watch as the boy struggled in the water.
A swimmer and surfer, Pignato ran downstairs and jumped off the pier in an effort to save the boy.
She hit a sandbar in about 2-3 feet of water.
Luckily, bystanders rescued her and the boy who is doing fine.
Pignato is now recovering at the hospital following surgery.
She says she would do it again!
Her co-workers have set up a GoFundMe account to assist her with her bills as she recovers.
