PINE HILLS, Fla. — Helena Madsen, a local high school junior and founder of The Giving Shelf, is sponsoring the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair at Pine Hills Elementary School in Orlando from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2.
All 650 students at the Title I school will be able to choose a book at the fair at no cost to their families.
Madsen founded The Giving Shelf to ensure every child can select and keep a book from a school book fair, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. This will mark the second time the organization has funded a complete book fair for the entire school.
The Giving Shelf previously sponsored Pine Hills Elementary School’s book fair in February, when 650 students also received free books.
Beyond book fairs, the organization has expanded its outreach at the school. The Giving Shelf has distributed more than 300 books during Literacy Night and more than 200 science books during Science Night.
