Florida senator introduces anti-hair discrimination bill

Orlando, Fla. — A proposed piece of legislation would effectively end discrimination based on natural hairstyles, according to Florida Senator Randolph Bracy III.

Bracy wants to get the "Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair", or CROWN Act passed in the upcoming 2020 legislative session. This new bill would prohibit discrimination from hairstyles such as dreadlocks, braids, and twists at work and in public places. This comes after several reports of students being penalized for violating a school code, including a boy with dreadlocks who attended a private school in Apopka last year.

In an interesting note, the 1964 Federal Civil Rights Act already protects the hairstyle of afros in anti-discrimination laws. However, there's no word yet on whether the House will file a companion bill.
