Family of slain Longwood man hopes vigil prompts leads in case

One week after a convenience store owner was gunned down in his driveway his family is asking for help in finding the shooter.

They hope someone will come forward and help police make an arrest in the shooting death of Shahidul Miah, 56.

Miah was shot and killed last week in front of his Longwood home when he came home from work.

Miah was the owner of the Kwik Mart on Bear Lake Road and State Road 436.

His family, friends and neighbors gathered Thursday night in the driveway where Miah was gunned down.

“Though I did not know him personally, he is still my brother. He’s my brother in faith and for all of us he’s our brother in humanity,” said Arthur Richards, an imam who led the group in prayer.

Strangers joined neighbors and friends to remember Miah.

“He was a leader. He was my hero and he’s gone. I will never get him back,” said Trina Miah, the victim’s daughter. “We want answers right now. It’s been a week. We know the first 48 hours is the crucial time. And after that, we still want answers and we want answers as soon as possible.”

Longwood police said they’ve been busy around the clock pursuing leads, but they still don’t have any suspects.

“They’re obviously dealing with a great tragedy and we want them to know that we are doing everything. The members of the Longwood Police Department are doing everything we can to bring closure,” said Cmdr. David Dowda.

More than 100 people attended the vigil.

“I was there that night and I was holding my dad, shaking his body. Nobody should have died like that. My dad did,” said the victim’s son, Tonmoy Miah.

Miah’s family believes he was targeted for the cash inside his store.
