DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach police are investigating a deadly shooting on the 700 block of School Street.

Police say they were called to the scene shortly before noon on Friday and tried to render aid to the victim, but he sadly did not survive.

Neighbors said this isn’t the first active police investigation in the community.

The director of the Rose Marie Bryon Children Center said she’s had to conduct both lockdown drills and actual lockdowns with the 43 elementary school children who attend Daytona Beach’s oldest after-school program.

The center’s Executive Director, Janet Elam Bryant, said the center was founded in 1946 to specifically be a safe haven for children in the community.

Bryant said that when she came to the center around noon on Friday, she found crime scene tape on the street adjacent to the children’s center and ultimately asked parents to pick up their kids early from Turie T. Small Elementary School, about a mile away.

“My heart just sank when the police officer told me what had happened. It’s very, it’s sickening,” said Bryant, “We need to learn how to get along around here and stop all the violence for the children’s sake.”

On Friday, investigators and crime scene technicians spent hours bagging evidence and towed a black Nissan Altima from the crime scene. So far, investigators have not identified the victim or said if they have any leads in this shooting investigation.
