Despite starring opposite Tom Hanks in the Oscar-nominated film 'Captain Phillips,' actor Barkhad Abdi says he's broke.
The New Yorker reports the 28-year-old made just $65,000 for his supporting role as Abduwali Muse, the real-life Somali pirate who hijacked the Maersk Alabama in 2009.
The actor's payday was more than two years ago. Since then, the film has grossed more than $100 million in theaters and even earned Abdi several honors for his work, including an Academy Award and BAFTA nomination for the supporting role.
Abdi worked as a cab driver before the film, then sold mobile phones in his hometown of Cedar-Riverside, in Minneapolis, after production on the movie wrapped up. He quit when the film debuted in theaters. The clothes he's been wearing on publicity tours are reportedly loaners from Columbia Pictures. He's also been living off a per diem at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and relying on a studio car to get to different events.
Abdi tells the magazine he plans to move to Los Angeles and audition for more roles, hoping to land a new gig soon.
