This discovery, detailed in a Nature paper, could allow researchers to directly measure a black hole’s spin for the first time.
S301 is the fastest star ever observed in the Milky Way, reaching speeds of 25,000 kilometers per second.
While the outcome is not guaranteed, astronomers are hopeful that S301’s close proximity to the black hole could provide valuable insights into its spin.
Researchers say future observations are planned to further study this phenomenon.
