Miami-Dade County, Fla. — A man and two women were arrested after identities of victims of the deadly Surfside condominium collapse were stolen.
Police said they left behind a trail of evidence including recorded phone calls.
Betsy Alejandra Cacho-Medina, 30, Kimberly Michelle Johnson, 34, and Rodney Choute, 38, face multiple counts of identity theft and fraud, Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced at a news conference Wednesday.
The suspects are accused of taking the personal identification of five people who died and two who survived the collapse of the Champlain Towers South tower in June.
The three suspects were able to steal $45,000 through credit cards, but another $60,000 in charges were declined.
The investigation, which involves local law enforcement, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, is still ongoing
Authorities ask any other families who think they may be victims of fraud to reach out to the State Attorney’s Office.
