Back in 2010, Archie Comics introduced a new gay character to Riverdale, and had him get married a year later.
Now the comic is going to push another boundary, and it's with Jughead, one of the comic's iconic characters, who's revealed in the issue out today (February 10th) to be asexual.
Catch News cited Chip Zdarsky, one of the writers of the current series of Archies along with Erica Henderson, as saying, "My view of Jughead is, over the 75 years of his existence, there have been sporadic moments where he has dabbled in the ladies, but historically he has been portrayed as asexual. They just didn't have a label for it, so they just called him a woman-hater. But he's not a misogynist, he just watches his cohorts lose their minds with hormones. . . . I think something like asexuality is underrepresented, and since we have a character who was asexual before people had a word for it, I"m continuing to write him that way."
Whatisasexuality.com describes what it means to be asexual:
An asexual person (“ace”, for short) is simply someone who does not experience sexual attraction. That’s all there is to it. Aces can be any sex or gender or age or ethnic background or body type, can be rich or poor, can wear any clothing style, and can be any religion or political affiliation.
In short: There is no asexual "type".
