ORLANDO, Fla. — Forecasters are monitoring three areas across the Atlantic basin for possible tropical development, though none currently pose an immediate threat to Florida or North America.

The area with the lowest chance of development is located off the coast of Portugal. Forecasters give the system about a 20% chance of developing. Even if it organizes, it is expected to be short-lived.

A second area of interest is located in the central Atlantic. This system is expected to remain well east of Bermuda and is not currently projected to affect North America. Its chances of development also remain low.

The area with the greatest chance of development is not yet an organized system. Instead, forecasters are watching a tropical wave that could move into the Atlantic within the next week. That wave currently has about a 30% chance of development.

Even if the wave strengthens into a tropical storm, current projections indicate it would likely turn north before reaching the Leeward Islands.

That would keep the system away from the Caribbean and, based on the forecast right now, no impact to Florida is expected.

Channel 9 will continue to monitor all three areas as conditions across the Atlantic evolve.
