VIDEO: Rare ‘leucistic’ red kangaroo at Upstate NY animal park may be only one in the world

An animal park in Upstate New York claims their new baby kangaroo may be the only one of its kind in the world.

The Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, NY, welcomed a baby kangaroo named Cosmo four months ago. According to the Times Union in Albany, Cosom is “leucistic,” which means he has a partial loss of pigmentation. Unlike albino kangaroos, he does not have pink eyes. His are actually dark. Both of Cosmo’s parents are typical red kangaroos.

“We are now aware of any leucistic red kangaroo in the United States, indicated just how rare of an occurrence this is,” park owner Jordan Patch told the Times Union.

Patch said he immediately searched Google for “leucistic kangaroo” and wasn’t able to find anything. He believes there could be some others in Australia, but they haven’t been officially identified.

Here's Cosmo!!

Meet Cosmo, our extremely rare leucistic male joey that’s been making headlines nationally! Leucistic is the lack of color pigmentation, resulting in a white coat. What makes him leucistic and not albino? There is black color pigmentation in the eyes, therefore not your typical, red-eyed albino mutation. We are not aware of any leucistic red kangaroo in the United States, proving just how rare this occurrence is! We are now working with professionals in the zoological community to see just how unique of a blessing this little one is!
