According to The Associated Press, New York State Police said they responded to a report of a possible drowning in the St. Lawrence River shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday. State troopers and first responders from nearby Cape Vincent arrived to find Mara dead in the river, police said in a news release.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming,” the release said, adding that investigators found “no signs of foul play.”

The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office plans to conduct an autopsy, police said.

Mara’s manager, Craig Dorfman, said in a statement that Mara “was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” according to CNN.

“I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway,” read the statement obtained by CNN. “She was electric, funny and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.”

In addition to her roles as Loretta Sweet on “ER” and Mrs. Sullivan on “Ray Donovan,” Mara’s TV credits included “Nash Bridges,” “Dexter” and “Star Trek: Enterprise,” CNN reported. She also appeared in the films “Break Even” (2020), “Mr. Saturday Night” (1992) and “Love Potion No. 9″ (1992), according to the news outlet.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
