ATLANTA — Asian small-clawed otters at the Georgia Aquarium have tested positive for the coronavirus, aquarium officials said on Sunday.
The waterborne mammals were tested after showing symptoms including sneezing, running noses, mild lethargy and coughing, officials said.
“Despite following all recommended health and safety protocols, it is suspected the otters may have acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member,” the aquarium said.
The otters are doing well and expected to make a full recovery. They have been removed from the exhibit while they recuperate.
The risk of animal-to-human transmission is rare and the otters do not come in direct contact with guests, officials said.
