Connecticut man sentenced to 65 years in prison in Fitbit murder case

ROCKVILLE, Conn. — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 65 years in prison in the Fitbit murder case that happened in 2015.

According to The Associated Press, Richard Dabate, 46, was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder of his wife in 2015.

Richard’s wife, Connie, 39 was shot and killed two days before Christmas in 2015 while their children were in school, according to the AP. The case drew national attention because of the Fitbit Connie was wearing and information about an affair that he was having an affair with a woman who was pregnant with their baby.

Prosecutors claimed that she was wearing a Fitbit activity tracker that contradicted statements Richard made to police during their investigation, according to the AP.

Richard told police during the investigation that a masked man broke in, killed his wife and tied him up, according to the AP. Police found Richard with knife wounds and with one arm/leg zip-tied to chair.

According to the AP, police took a timeline of events from Richard and compared them to data that was found on Connie’s Fitbit that had shown that she was moving about an hour before the time Richard told police she was shot. Police said there were also no signs of struggle.

Richard was convicted by a jury in May of murder and other charges, according to the AP. Richard and his lawyer are planning to appeal the verdicts.
