Barbara Bush supports Black Lives Matter, volunteers to be poll worker on Election Day

Human rights and health care advocate Barbara Bush is taking an active role in politics ahead of Nov. 3.

The daughter of President George W. Bush said she has volunteered to be a poll worker on Election Day.

“We have a shortage of poll workers in the United States,” Barbara told People magazine in a recent interview “And so my husband and I both volunteered to be poll workers. We’ll see what that means for us. I don’t know where we’ll be. But we’re fortunate that we are both healthy, and are not an at-risk population, and can quarantine ourselves after that, beforehand and after.”

Barbara, 38, and husband Craig Coyne have been staying with the former president and former first lady Laura Bush at their Texas ranch for the past five months amid the coronavirus pandemic.

During that time, Barbara completed a Master’s program with Harvard online and started working on new advocacy initiatives.

“I’ve started a new job to work on social change issues ... and I will see where that goes,” she told People. “I’m excited through that to be able to work on health, what I’ve always loved, and the social determinants of health, which are critical to address right now with COVID, and also to support Black Lives Matter ... It’s very important to me to be involved with the movement for Black lives and doing what we can to support racial justice in the United States.”

Barbara, who has been outspoken about her support for marriage equality, said that she does not label herself as a Republican or Democrat. Her twin sister, Jenna Bush Hager, has said the same.

In the past, she has partnered with the Human Rights Campaign and is the co-founder of Global Health Corps, a nonprofit organization that helps support emerging global health leaders.
