REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ named saddest song of all time in poll

REM’s classic 1992 song, “Everybody Hurts” was named the saddest song of all time in a recent OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults.

It was followed by Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.”

Coming in fourth was Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” and “Yesterday” by The Beatles was fifth.

Asked about listening to sad songs, 36 percent said they do so when they’re feeling nostalgic and 24 said they do it after a break-up, while just under half said a sad song can actually brighten their day.

In other categories: Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and The Waves polled as some of the happiest songs; “Eye of The Tiger” by Survivor, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” and “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John were named the most motivational songs; and Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and “Let It Be” by The Beatles were listed as the most relaxing songs.
