U.S. Supreme Court to continue phone arguments due to virus threat

With the new term of the U.S. Supreme Court a little less than three weeks away, the Justices announced on Wednesday that they would hear arguments in October by telephone because of the threat of the Coronavirus.

“The Court will hear all oral arguments scheduled for the October session by telephone conference, following the same format used for the May teleconference arguments,” the High Court announced in a written statement.

“In keeping with public health guidance in response to COVID-19, the Justices and counsel will all participate remotely,” the announcement added.

Back in May, the Justices held a series of arguments by telephone after delaying in-person arguments because of the virus outbreak - and this system will continue in October.

A live broadcast of the telephone proceedings will again be offered to the public and news media, ironically providing more transparency than normal Supreme Court arguments.

The broadcasts in May were the first time the Supreme Court had routinely made its arguments available live.

No decision has been made by the Court yet on whether telephone arguments will continue for arguments scheduled already in November and December.
