DELTONA, Fla. — Two Sanford men who shot a car on I-4 and fled Volusia County deputies at high speed were arrested on Saturday, according to a press release.
Deputies say the shooting occurred on Westbound I-4 between Daytona and Lake Helen shortly before 4:24 p.m, with 26-year-old Deon Lenail Brown putting a bullet hole in the windshield of a passing vehicle carrying 4 people.
The victims were not injured, but their testimony and dash camera video allowed deputies to track the suspects’ vehicle via helicopter, beginning their chase mere miles away in Deltona.
As seen from the perspective of “Air One,” 23-year-old Kobe Deron Hunter’s evasive driving takes himself and Brown from speeding around cars on I-4 to dodging incoming traffic on side streets and running red lights, eventually abandoning their vehicle after a rollover crash to crawl away from pursuing deputies through the brush:
Hunter, seen wearing a black shirt in the video, was arrested without incident and charged with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, according to a press release.
Deputies say that Brown, on the other hand, had stayed in the brush, and was apprehended by a K-9 unit.
Brown is charged with shooting into an occupied conveyance, along with 4 counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
In a statement, Sheriff Mike Chitwood thanked the victims and responding deputies for their quick work:
“The scumbags who want to engage in idiotic gunplay on our roads can be sure they’ll receive the full attention of law enforcement and the justice system,” Chitwood said.
“Fortunately, no one was killed today, but the morons sitting in jail tonight did just about everything they could to tempt fate and cause a tragedy.”
This was the second shooting on I-4 in Volusia County in two weeks.
On Feb. 21, Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a shooting between vehicles on I-4 near Cassadaga; no injuries were reported.
