University of Central Florida starts classes Monday with pre-pandemic guidelines

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — We are just one day away from the return of fall classes at the University of Central Florida, and this year students are returning to pre-pandemic guidelines.

That means while some precautions are strongly encouraged, students will be returning to the classroom without mask requirements.

“When we moved in with COVID-19 at its highest, I’m not as scared anymore. With precautions in place I’m excited to see campus more active this years,” said Isabel Iatorre-Rheos.

And while masks are strongly encouraged for people indoors, they are not required.

“I’m going to be wearing my mask, especially in the classroom to prevent the spread of the virus. I’m working with special needs people and for their safety I’m going to mask up,” Iatorre-Rheos said.

While she and Riya Patel aren’t super concerned about COVID-19 spreading on campus, they do encourage people to get the shot if they haven’t already.

“Just be safe and listen to the science behind it. The scientists definitely know better than you do.” Patel said.

While students can always go to the health center for a vaccine, doses will also be available all week long during the welcome week Pegasus Palooza events.

Incoming UCF Knights should also expect to undergo a health screening before Monday.

All students are expected to submit a “self checker” before moving in or arriving on campus.

The form asks about people’s symptoms, and if they get a red screen they will have to do an additional screening at student services, which could include a rapid COVID-19 test.
