DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Daytona Beach police chief said the man suspected of fatally stabbing a Daytona Beach couple confessed to the murders in custody.

Chief Jakari Young said Jean Macean, 32, confessed to killing Terry and Brenda Aultman in custody Thursday night.

Macean, who is accused of stabbing and slashing the necks of the couple while they were out cycling over the weekend, made his first appearance in front of a judge Friday morning.

Only Channel 9 was there Thursday night when detectives marched Macean, of Orlando, from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to the jail.

“I apologize,” Macean said when questioned by a Channel 9 reporter.

Macean is behind bars after a five-day search. He’s accused of stabbing and slashing the necks of Terry and Brenda Aultman Sunday morning. Police said they were cycling home at the time and that the murders were unprovoked.

The Aultmans’ daughter Sarah spoke during the news conference, holding back tears and calling Macean a “monster.” She said the situation is “a nightmare that I never expected.”
