New research suggests the coronavirus responsible for the current global pandemic has mutated into a more infectious strain of the virus.
According to a report released by the Florida-based Scripps Research Institute, COVID 19 has mutated since the pandemic began.
In controlled lab experiments, Profs Hyeryun Choe and Mike Farzan show that a #coronavirus mutation (in this spike) allows it to infect more cells. If this variant causes greater infectivity in people, it could explain differences in severity of outbreaks https://t.co/sUWyNrWMP8 pic.twitter.com/f2yVS3Zs5p

The Scripps team says the mutant virus infects cells more efficiently, causing it to spread more rapidly. The research was published earlier this month and is still undergoing a peer review.
WDBO reached out to both of the lead researchers on the project. We will update the story as we learn more.
