Lake County, Fla. — A Eustis police captain is back on the beat less than a month after having surgery to remove a bullet from his back.
On December 19, 2019 Captain Gary Winheim was shot in the line of duty by a suspect who had just robbed a gas station on state road 19. The suspect later identified as Jayson Colvin, was killed in a shootout with police after they found him hiding under a canoe in Umatilla.
Winheim was transported to the hospital where doctors discovered that the bullet entered near his ear, traveled down his neck and lodged in his back.
After surgery to remove the bullet Winhiem was released from the hospital the next day.
Tuesday, the Eustis Police Department posted the above picture on its Facebook page, welcoming Captain Winheim back to work.
