2020 Gold Star Mothers Day: Orange County honors fallen veterans' families virtually

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Orange County courthouse downtown, Mayor Jerry L. Demings and constituents from the Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council ushered a live broadcast to share the stories of fallen veterans' families, observing the nation’s 84th annual Gold Star Mothers Day.

“The Gold Star Mothers and Families day is an opportunity to come together and honor and remember surviving military mothers and family members for their sacrifice and service to this great nation,” Demings said.

“I encourage everyone to remember our fallen soldiers and their families by supporting the brave men and women of our military service, our veterans who have proudly fought for our freedom, and the families they support.”

The 20-minute ceremony was held without an audience this morning due to COVID-19:

On Friday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced that the city’s next Veterans' Day parade will not be held in person because of the continuing pandemic.

Dyer said that the decision was not made lightly, going on preview virtual observances like today’s as supplementary measures that simply must be taken.
