Local animal shelter dealing with surge in surrendered pets

A central Florida based animal shelter reports a significant uptick in the number of animals being surrendered by their owners.

Pet Rescue by Judy founder Judy Sarullo tells WDBO her shelter received more than two dozen animals in less than a week.

“Since Friday we’ve taken in ten dogs, a mother and seven kittens, and another ten cats,” said Sarullo. On a typical weekend, Sarullo says they receive 1-2 animals, which makes the recent surge even more troubling.

Sarullo says it reminds her of the “Great Recession” more than a decade ago.

“We’ve had some returns from our adoptions because, unfortunately, the people have either lost their jobs or they’re losing their homes, so we’re getting a lot coming back and more that are coming in because of the situation with our economy,” said Sarullo.

She says many of those animals are arriving at her Sanford shelter needing veterinary care.
