FDA: These 9 hand sanitizers should be considered hazardous waste

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to use any hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico.

They say the products listed below could contain methanol, or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested.

Anyone who comes into contact with methanol should seek medical attention.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning  are nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or even death.

The FDA says that everyone who may be using these products on their hands are at risk, but young children who accidentally ingest them and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.

The company has been asked to remove the products from store shelves, but so far no action has been taken according to the feds.

Anyone who may have any of the above products is urged to dispose of them in hazardous waste containers.

Do not flush or pour them down the drain.
