Joe Durney | Honoree for January 28th, 2022

Joe was nominated by his friend, Tom Hawkins, who said “I would like to nominate Senior Deputy Joe Durney, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. He has been a Deputy for over 20 years. He is presently assigned to Daytona International Airport.

Senior Deputy Durney is an extremely valuable asset to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. He is a K-9 Handler Trainer. In this position he helps train new deputy’s in proper K-9 dog handling procedures. Helping them become proficient in K-9 Handling when they go out in the community on their own. As a K-9 Handler he is often requested by various police agencies in the Central Florida area and throughout the State of Florida to assist in the apprehension of law breakers, criminals and search and rescue missions. This often requires him to work long hours/days away from his family.

He is a member of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordinance Specialist (EOD) Team. He is extremely dedicated and meticulous in the performance of this job. In this position he is responsible for the inspection of the entire Daytona International Speedway Complex for “ALL” public events held there to ensure they are “free of any unusual packages” that could be harmful to the people attending the events.

Recently, he discovered a “Strange Package” at the Daytona International Airport where he works. He cleared the facility and with the help of his K-9 dog he successfully investigated the situation, and resolved the situation resulting in “No” harm to passengers in the airport or damage to the airport.

I have known Deputy Durney for many years. He is a “True Professional in every sense of the word and in everything he does. He always has a “Smile or a Good Word” for you no matter what is going on in his life at the time. I have known him to work several weeks at a time without any time off, but he never complains. He “REALLY LOVES HIS JOB”.

In conclusion, I feel he should be recognized as First Responder of the Week. He puts his “LIFE on the LINE EVERY DAY” to fight crime trying to make this a safer community for his family and the people of Volusia County. Let’s show him we appreciate his service!!”

Joe, thanks for all you do for the community. As a way of saying thanks, you will receive an adventurous day for 4 at Wild Florida.
