Saving Thousands! with Robert Palmer

Holiday shopping that won’t break the bank

The holiday season is creeping up on us. On this week’s edition of Saving Thousands! with Robert Palmer, I tell you why stores are on our your side when it comes to staying on budget this shopping season.

But first, if you haven’t heard, your money is safe with a number of big banks.

Last week banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. scrapped the plan to charge a monthly fee for making debit card purchases. It sounds like a lot of angry consumers were taking my advice to shop around and threatened to close their accounts.

With the holiday season creeping up on us another thing you shouldn’t be paying for this holiday season is high prices for presents. Retail figures for November and December are expected to be about half over last year. That means department stores will have to drop prices to get consumers through the doors.

And did you know what day of the week you shop matters? New studies are showing different products can be found at deep discounts on certain days.

Here’s a list of the best days to make common purchases:

Airfare: Tuesday

Most airlines post domestic fares sales on Monday even, so on Tuesday there’s a scramble to match prices. These cheaper fares usually last through Thursday, but are more apt to sell out faster.

Appliances: Sunday

Most people open their wallets on appliances during the weekend. Retailers know this and trend to drop prices so they look favorable in comparison with competitors.

Cars: Monday

Dealerships are more open to negotiating on Mondays when the pressure is high to recover from lackluster weekend traffic. Later in the week you have less leverage with fresh crowds.

Electronics: Monday

Computers, TVs, digital cameras and even video games can run 4% cheaper on Mondays. Manufactures like Dell and Sony tend to introduce discounts on Mondays and retailers are quick to pass up these on.

Groceries and personal care items: Sunday

Most grocery stores offer weekly sales circulars on Wednesdays, but Sunday shoppers can combine newspaper coupons with store deals for extra savings.
