VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
A Volusia County deputy was airlifted to the hospital after a car slammed into his patrol cruiser in Orange City on Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said Deputy Roy Galarza was getting off his patrol shift in DeBary when another car slammed into him off of North Volusia Avenue and East Graves Avenue.
Officials said the 28-year-old deputy was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
While he’s still being evaluated at the hospital, the injuries are non-life threatening, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Galarza was hired with the sheriff's office in August 2003.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
No other details about the deputy or the other driver involved in the crash have been released.
Officials said a pedestrian was also struck and killed while trying to cross a road just two blocks away from the deputy-involved crash. They said the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle off South Volusia Avenue and West Ohio Avenue. (Read more here)
