A new law taking effect will allow workers and customers to keep guns in their cars when parked in lots owned by private and government employers.

The measure has led to a showdown between groups like the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the National Rifle Association.

The business community argues the law undermines the property rights of business owners. The Chamber also claims it limits the ability of businesses to provide a safe environment for customers and employees.

Supporters of the law say people have a constitutional right to carry firearms and they should be able to keep guns in their cars for protection.

At a hearing last week, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle said the gun law is so badly written that it's ``stupid,'' but he delayed ruling on a temporary injunction until mid-July.

** More laws that go into effect

- 1.2 million customers of Citizens Property Insurance will get a rate freeze through 2009. The freeze was set to expire this year.

- People who receive noncriminal traffic tickets and can't afford to pay will be allowed to pay them through community service.

- There will also be changes to how the State grades high schools. FCAT will become less important and more emphasis will be placed on factors like graduation rates and the number of students in advanced classes.

- Elementary school children will be required to have 30 minutes of continuous exercise a day. Starting fall 2009 middle schools will bring back a daily gym class.

- People who spend time in prison and are subsequently proven innocent will automatically receive $50,000 as long as they don't have a previous felony conviction.

- Parents can have children covered on their insurance until age 30 as long as they are enrolled in college.

- Travel agencies that provide trips to countries listed as "terrorist states" will have to post a $250,000 bond to stay in operation. This has caused businesses that specialize in trips to Cuba to sue the state of Florida.
